Already familiar to local Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) golfers as one of the best 25 municipal golf courses in all of Texas, the Meadowbrook Golf Course received an honorable mention in Avid Golfer magazine when the course was named in its “Best of Public Golf 2022” list. Since it was placed on such a prestigious list, you might be wondering what makes this course so special.

The par-71 course offers 18 holes and has been around since 1920. It has the most rolling terrain of any course in the DFW area and an incredibly active 200-plus member Golf Association. You can play to a length of 6,363 yards from Championship tees, 5,966 yards from Regular tees, and 5,000 yards from Forward tees. Weekday fees for the full course range from $12 to $20, while weekend fees range from $15 to $26.

The Retreat

If you like to combine your game with a complete reprieve from the busy urban DFW environment, you’ll love The Retreat  in nearby Cleburne. This course has an oasis-like country feel, yet it’s only 30 minutes from downtown Fort Worth. Whether you are just starting out and looking to improve your game or an expert golfer, The Retreat has a course for you. Try this award-winning par-72 course and explore the tree-lined paths that run through it while enjoying a game of golf.

If you’re a beginner, you can stop by the Pro Shop to get the best equipment for you, as recommended by The Retreat’s extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff. You can even go to the clubhouse to learn from the best, as pros will help you improve your swing, teach you about the nuances of the game, and let you practice on the available putting green.

Rockwood Park Golf Course

Another almost century-old course in the area, the Rockwood Park Golf Course was first established in 1938 but recently underwent a $5.1 million renovation, making it look and feel new. The renovation also lengthened the course itself, taking it up to 7,053 yards of play.

On this par-72 course, which was reopened in June 2017, you’ll find four sets of tees, where you can play to your heart’s content. The sets range from 5,400 to 7,100 feet. Keep in mind that in the springtime, Rockwood Park is usually closed on Mondays for maintenance; however, in the summer, the course is generally open every day.

Weekday fees are in effect Monday through Thursday and range from $17 to $33, Friday fees range from $18 to $36, and weekend and holiday fees range from $21 to $49, depending on the time of day.

Iron Horse Golf Club

This public North Richland Hills golf club is known not only for its courses but also for its great amenities, including a top-rated restaurant on the premises. Visit the Iron Horse Golf Club to enjoy one of the most beautifully laid out courses in the area, with its assortment of oak, mesquite, and cottonwood trees that line the Bermuda fairways and the two creeks that wind their way through the land.

Local golfers might tell you that this is one of the hardest courses in the state, but the Iron Horse Golf Club actually offers several options for tees on each hole, making it a great choice for less experienced golfers as well. Beginners can also improve their swing in the enormous practice facility. After you’re done with your game, enjoy a relaxing meal on the premises overlooking the natural beauty of the course. You can book your tee times up to 14 days in advance, so you don’t need to worry about finding something at the last minute.

Hawks Creek Golf Club

The regulation 18-hole course of Hawks Creek Golf Club is located just four miles from downtown Fort Worth and includes a great practice facility for those who want to learn and improve their game before hitting the course itself. Get help from experienced instructors, as well as custom club fittings at the shop on the premises. Then, make your way down to the beautiful course, where after your training, you’ll be able to overcome the bunkers and water hazards found throughout the property.

Daily fees vary depending on whether you arrive before or after 12 p.m. From Monday to Thursday, expect to pay $55 in the morning and $40 in the afternoon. On Fridays, you’ll pay $60 or $45, and on weekends and holidays, you’ll pay $70 or $55. Though the course may be a little pricey, the experience you get is more than worth it.

Sugar Tree Golf Club

Shot makers who want to work on their strategy will want to check out Sugar Tree Golf Club, which offers four sets of tee boxes. The tree-lined fairways and elevation changes create a challenging course for any golfer to navigate, but it is very fulfilling to complete. The par-72, 6,810-yard layout is on the banks of the Brazos River, so expect water to be a challenge for 13 out of 18 holes.
