General Motors (GM) recently announced that it will heavily focus on producing a range of new electric vehicles (EVs). This is a major change of focus for the company, and the move will place it in the top tier of EV manufacturers when complete. As one of GM’s core brands, General Motors Truck Company (GMC) will be integral to this revolutionary move. In 2021, the company made headlines by launching the incredibly powerful and innovative Hummer EV Pickup, and it has much more in the works.

At Hiley Buick GMC of Fort Worth, we couldn’t be more excited about GM’s move toward electric technology and want to share some of this news with you. Keep reading to learn more about the technology at the core of GM’s EV lineup and explore some of the EVs on the way from GMC.

The New GM EV Lineup in Fort Worth, TXGMC's New EV Lineup

GM is the largest auto manufacturer in the United States and has long been a leader in vehicle technology. It comprises four core auto brands that have been long-time favorites in the United States, including GMC, Buick, Cadillac, and Chevrolet. At the beginning of 2021, GM’s leadership announced a plan to completely cease the production of internal combustion vehicles by 2035. This is part of the company’s initiative to become carbon-neutral by 2040.

GM’s core brands will play a key role in this revolutionary transformation. Earlier this year, GM announced a range of new EVs, including the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Bolt, Cadillac Celestiq, and Buick Envision. The GMC brand has already entered the EV market with the Hummer Pickup EV and will be adding the Hummer EV SUV and the Sierra Denali EV in the near future. This huge range of EV releases will make GM one of the most prominent players in the EV market over the next decade.

GM’s Dedicated EV Platform

The core of GM’s EV transformation is its dedicated, modular EV platform. This global platform includes separate battery and drive units that can be combined in various ways depending on the application. The same elements can be used for SUVs, crossovers, pickup trucks, and cars. Uniquely, the GM chassis can support front-wheel-, back-wheel-, and four-wheel-drive configurations. The flexibility of GM’s new chassis design will also have the added benefits of decreasing costs and enabling revolutionary new cabin designs.

GM Ultium Technology

Ultium battery technology is the beating heart of the new GM global EV platform. Like the GM EV chassis, the Ultium battery system is modular, with groups of cells forming a battery module and groups of modules forming a battery pack. These elements can be stacked in various ways, depending on the type of vehicle in question. The cells for trucks, crossovers, and SUVs are stacked vertically, while cars use horizontally stacked cells.

One of the unique features of the Ultium system is digital programming. This allows digital updates to the battery system as improvements become available. Gm has also focused on solving some of the most common issues encountered in EV design, range, charging, and acceleration. GM estimates that the Ultium system will offer more than 300 miles of range on a full charge and has introduced a variety of innovations that allow very quick charging. According to the company’s estimates, some of their EV will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately three seconds.

Hummer EV Pickup

The Hummer EV pickup is the first EV to join the GMC family. This groundbreaking truck uses the GM global platform and provides exceptional power and range for a vehicle of its size. The all-electric powertrain provides 1,000 horsepower and up to 11,500 lb-ft of available torque. The range of the super truck is estimated at 350 miles.

While the EV Hummer’s power makes it a serious competitor for traditional trucks, it also sports a range of truly unique features. The dedicated EV chassis includes two drive modules, enabling four-wheel steering. The Hummer EV pickup is even capable of limited diagonal driving with a feature called Crabwalk. Style is another factor that makes the Hummer EV pickup truly special. It sports a sleek, modern design that rides the line between pickup and SUV and includes a modular roof system that offers transparent sky panels.

Hummer EV SUV

The next addition to the GMC EV lineup will be the 2024 Hummer EV SUV. This vehicle will be a completely updated take on the traditionally muscular Hummer design. Like GM’s other EVs, it will utilize the same global chassis and Ultium battery technology, allowing a range of over 300 miles and rapid charging. While we don’t know everything about this vehicle yet, it will feature a slightly shorter wheelbase than the pickup and will sport a range of advanced features for off-road dominance, including Crabwalk, four-wheel steering, and extract mode, which allows the suspension to rise about 6 inches in rough terrain.

Sierra Denali EV

GMC recently revealed that it will add a third vehicle to its EV lineup. This will be an all-electric version of the extremely popular GMC Sierra pickup truck. Initially, the truck will only be available in the top-line Denali trim. While very little is known about this truck at the moment, it will be based on the same technology as GMC’s other EVs and will feature a brilliant and completely redesigned look.
