What Is New In The First Ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Truck
Are you excited about getting behind the wheel of an all-electric pickup truck? GMC is joining the electric vehicle (EV) truck race for the 2024 model year with the Sierra EV. This model will combine the upscale design features that buyers have come to appreciate from the gas-powered Sierra 1500 with an excellent driving range and impressive towing abilities.
We’re looking forward to seeing this all-new EV hit our showroom at Hiley Buick GMC of Fort Worth, Texas. Although we don’t know everything about this exciting new addition to our lineup, our truck experts can already fill you in on some key details. What Is the 2024 Sierra EV?
The Sierra EV is a full-size pickup and GMC’s largest all-electric truck to date. It builds on the brand’s release of the Hummer EV, which also falls into the full-size pickup class but has a smaller cargo bed and towing capacity.
The Sierra EV is due to hit our showroom in early 2024. Its initial release will consist of its range-topping Denali Edition 1 trim, which will be equipped with all the available features the truck can offer. As the year progresses, we expect other trims, including an off-roading specialist AT4 trim, to join the lineup.
Sierra EV Powertrain and Performance
The Sierra EV’s powertrain is built around a battery pack and two electric motors to produce a four-wheel drive system. GMC expects the Sierra EV to produce a remarkable 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque in its most powerful driving setting, known as Max Power mode. This driving mode offers an estimated 9,500 pounds of towing capacity and a payload limit of 1,300 pounds. These figures should make the Sierra EV an ideal truck for the job site or recreational activities, such as pulling a family-size camper out of town.
The battery pack is capable of charging on a Level 3 DC fast charger at up to 350 kWh. The Sierra EV can add 100 miles of the driving range at this pace in just 10 minutes. There’s currently no faster-charging truck in the EV market than the Sierra EV.
On top of serving as a strong cargo hauler, the Sierra EV will have many key features to make it an expert off-road truck. One is the air suspension system, which will allow you to adjust this truck’s ground clearance by up to 2 inches. This additional height will make it easier to tackle rocks or other large obstacles.
Another helpful feature is GMC’s unique Crab Walk. Thanks to the Sierra EV’s ability to steer using all four wheels, Crab Walk enables the truck to travel diagonally when you’re moving at slow speeds. This feature will prove incredibly helpful if you’re trying to escape from a tight spot while tackling rough terrain.
Sierra EV Driving Range
GMC estimates that the Sierra EV will have a driving range of up to 400 miles when fully charged. This figure refers to the range of the Denali Edition 1 truck. We’ll have to wait to find out how the other trims in the lineup compare with their driving ranges. However, we can expect the lower trims to come in with ranges of over 300 miles, which would make them extremely competitive against their EV pickup rivals from other brands.
Sierra EV Cargo Space
The cargo bed in the GMC Sierra EV measures 5 feet 11 inches in length. This makes it almost a foot longer than the 5-foot-long bed offered in the Hummer EV. What’s more, the Sierra EV includes the option to open the partition between the rear row and the cargo bed to create 9 feet of storage space from the front row to the tailgate. With the tailgate folded down, you can make use of up to 11 feet of storage space in your EV pickup.
Due to the placement of the battery in the center of the truck and the absence of a traditional engine, the Sierra EV boasts an extra storage space up front. Known as the eTrunk, this small trunk is where you usually find an engine. It’ll have two drains, making it ideal for storing cold drinks on a camping trip. In addition, a 120-volt power outlet will be located inside so you can keep any electric devices fully charged while you’re on the go.
Sierra EV Interior and Infotainment Tech
Most of what we know about the Sierra EV’s interior concerns the Denali Edition 1 trim. This vehicle will be equipped with all the luxuries you could imagine, such as quilted leather seats, Denali logos throughout, and heated front seats. GMC’s all-new infotainment screen is the largest one ever offered in a GMC pickup, measuring 16.8 inches.
As other trims hit the market, we’ll have more details about the specific technology available at each stage of the trim lineup. These tech features may include smartphone compatibility, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and various premium stereo options. Additionally, various driver safety features will become available at different stages of the trim lineup.
GMC Sierra EV Trims and Pricing
So far, we only know about the Denali Edition 1 trim. This trim will arrive in GMC showrooms a few months before the Denali, which we expect to arrive in the spring of 2024. To get a Denali Edition 1, you’ll have to place an order in advance because this will be a limited edition line.
After the Denali arrives, we expect other trims familiar to GMC buyers to hit the market, including an off-roading AT4 model and an upscale Elevation trim. We’ll keep you posted when we find out more about pricing and features for these Sierra EV trims.
Pricing for the Denali Edition 1 hasn’t been released yet. However, given the cutting-edge technology and wide range of standard features available in this EV pickup, we expect it to be in the low six-figure range.
