GMC’s 2.7-liter I-4 TurboMax engine has quickly gained a name for itself. This new turbo-four puts out 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. You can find the TurboMax engine in the Sierra and Canyon pickups. A 3.0-liter I-6 turbo-diesel engine balances efficiency and power to perfection. The turbo-diesel engine has active thermal management to maintain ideal engine temperatures and a variable-geometry turbocharger for responsive power delivery. As a result, it produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. The turbo-diesel engine is found in the Sierra 1500 pickup and the Yukon SUV. The GMC HUMMER has always been known for its impressive capability. However, the new HUMMER EV takes electrified driving to new heights. GMC makes the HUMMER EV as an SUV or a pickup. Thanks to the three electric motors powered by GMC’s Ultium battery pack, this EV powertrain puts out 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque.

Acceleration Times

All-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles don’t accelerate as fast as two-wheel-drive models. Using the same engine in different cars also results in varying acceleration times, primarily because of vehicle weight. For example, the Sierra 1500 sprints from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds with the 6.2-liter engine. With AWD, the Sierra 1500 can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Yukon rear-drive models with the 6.2-liter V-8 get there in 6.1 seconds. Yukon models with the 5.3-liter V-8 can go from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. GMC has yet to publish a zero-to-60 mph time for the Sierra 1500 with this engine. With GMC’s 2.7-liter TurboMax engine, the Canyon pickup can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The 3.0-liter I-6 turbo-diesel engine allows the Yukon SUV to go from zero to 60 mph in 8 seconds. The HUMMER EV SUV races from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds with the three-motor powertrain. The HUMMER EV pickup with the same powertrain rockets from zero to 60 mph in an astonishing 3 seconds.

Advanced Performance Technology

GMC offers the four-corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension system in many vehicles. This system helps smooth out road imperfections by adjusting the damping in your shock absorbers. It also adjusts the vehicle’s height, raising it for off-roading and lowering it at highway speeds or to improve aerodynamics for accelerating. Many GMC models have selectable drive modes that tune your throttle, suspension, steering, and power output to adapt to different driving conditions. For example, the Sport drive mode dials in vehicle dynamics for a more thrilling experience. Electrified powertrain technology has introduced impressive performance to the industry. GMC’s HUMMER EV provides ample proof of this point. Using the Watts to Freedom drive mode, the HUMMER EV can boost maximum torque to 11,500 lb-ft for short periods. That torque, backed by 1,000 horsepower, provides ideal power for quickly going from zero to 60 mph. For safety reasons, engaging Watts to Freedom isn’t as simple as pushing a button, so you can’t engage it by accident. Instead, you press the Stabilitrak/Electronic Stability Control button twice. Then, confirm the prompt on your infotainment screen using the steering wheel controls that you want to engage Watts to Freedom. Once confirmed, the system will lower your HUMMER EV’s ride height for enhanced aerodynamics. Watts to Freedom will also adjust your shock absorbers, cooling system, and accelerator to handle the increased torque. As torque builds, your Torque Gauge Capability graphic bars will fill up. Once you achieve maximum available torque, a prompt will tell you to press the brake pedal with your left foot. Then, another prompt will instruct you to press the accelerator to the floor. The sound of an engine hitting its rpm limit signals that you’re ready to release the brake pedal. Once you release the brake pedal, your HUMMER EV will accelerate extremely fast. Watts to Freedom has so much power that GMC recommends only using it on a closed course.

Towing and Hauling Capability

Powerful engines deliver thrilling drives, but they also help get work done, whether towing your boat to the lake or hauling a bulldozer to the job site. As you might expect, the more power and torque an engine has, the higher your vehicle’s towing capacity will be. For example, the Canyon pickup can tow up to 7,700 pounds with its 2.7-liter TurboMax engine. The same engine in the Sierra 1500 can tow up to 9,500 pounds. Sierra 1500 trucks with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine can tow up to 11,200 pounds and 13,100 pounds with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. The Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,300 pounds with the turbo-diesel engine. Two- or four-wheel-drive drivetrains affect how much you can tow. For example, a HUMMER EV model with three motors, two for the rear axle and a third for the front axle, can tow up to 8,500 pounds. Two-motor models power only the rear wheels and can tow up to 12,000 pounds.
