Introducing The All New Electric GMC Hummer EV in Fort Worth, TX

September 8th, 2022 by

GMC discontinued its gas-powered Hummer line in 2010, but the Hummer brand is making an impressive comeback. The Hummer electric vehicle (EV) lineup includes a pickup released for the 2022 model year and an all-new SUV expected to hit showrooms in early 2023. Here’s a rundown of what we know so far about the Hummer EV here at Hiley Buick GMC of Fort Worth.

GMC Hummer EV Overview

Hummer EV Charging

GMC’s Hummer EV lineup consists of two vehicles: the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. These two vehicles were developed as part of GMC’s shift towards hybrid and all-electric trucks and crossovers in the coming years.

The Hummer brand was previously associated with the Hummer H3 crossover and H3T truck. These gas-powered vehicles have some visual similarities to the new generation of Hummers, but that’s where the similarities end.

The Hummer EV Pickup was the first of the two vehicles to be released. For 2022, the Edition 1 trim was sold with an MSRP of around $108,000. Excitement was so great that all Edition 1 vehicles were reserved, leading GMC to create a waiting list. Further Hummer EV Pickup trims are expected to arrive in our GMC showroom in early 2023, and a more affordable Hummer EV2 Pickup is due out in early 2024.

Hummer EV Pickup

The Hummer EV Pickup achieves an incredible 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque in its Edition 1 configuration. These eye-watering numbers are produced by a single electric motor on the front axle and two motors at the rear. The motors are powered by a 200 kilowatt-hour battery, giving the Hummer EV a driving range of 329 miles when fully charged.

With this remarkable power, you won’t be surprised to learn that the Hummer EV Pickup is quick off the line. It can move from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. If you want to experience the full power of the Hummer EV’s launch, you should check out the Watts to Freedom (WTF) feature that’s part of Edition 1.

The Hummer EV Pickup’s power also translates into strong towing abilities. The 2022 Hummer EV Pickup is rated to tow 7,500 pounds, which is more than enough to pull a decent-sized camper or boat out of town for the weekend.

If you’re a fan of off-roading, the Hummer has you covered. Its suspension has an incredible 16 inches of ground clearance, allowing this GMC pickup to handle rocks and uneven terrain with ease. The Hummer EV also features four-wheel steering, which means you can maneuver along the most difficult trails. A remarkable feature that allows the Hummer’s wheels to tilt sideways helps this pickup to “crab walk,” which will assist you in getting safely out of the tightest spots.

Inside the cabin, all Hummer EV Pickups will come with a crew cab that can seat up to five people. The cargo bed at the rear measures 5 feet in length and has a payload limit of 1,300 pounds. To keep you and your passengers entertained on a road trip or off-roading adventure, the Hummer has a mammoth-sized 13.4-inch infotainment screen and a 14-speaker stereo. Connectivity features include a WiFi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth.

Hummer EV SUV

GMC’s Hummer EV SUV will pack an incredible amount of power for a crossover and is expected to be just as capable of tackling trails as the pickup. GMC states that the Hummer EV SUV’s power train will generate up to 830 horsepower.

Some Hummer EV SUVs will be equipped with two motors, while others will have three. The EV2 and 2X trims will be fitted with dual electric motors, giving them a maximum output of 625 horsepower. Only the 3x and Edition 1 models will have the third electric motor, which will help boost their output to 830 horsepower.

Speculation suggests that the Hummer EV SUV will move from 0 to 60 mph in around 3.5 seconds, about half a second slower than the Hummer EV Pickup. The SUV is fitted with a slightly smaller battery than the Pickup due to the SUV riding on a shorter wheelbase.

The Hummer EV SUV will have 10.2 inches of ground clearance when driving normally. However, you can take advantage of the air suspension and GMC’s Extract Mode to boost the ground clearance to 16 inches. Another clever feature for off-roaders who enjoy the thrill of open-top riding is the Hummer EV SUV’s removable roof panels. It will also have the same “crab walking” abilities as the Pickup.

Inside the cabin, the SUV looks much like the Hummer EV Pickup. It will feature the same 13.4-inch infotainment display and 12-inch digital gauge cluster. If you need more storage space in the cabin, you can fold down the rear seats to open up over 80 cubic feet of capacity.

Tips for Owning a GMC Electric VehicleGMC's New EV Lineup

If you’re considering buying a Hummer EV Pickup or SUV, you’ll need to consider your charging options. The battery in the Hummer EV Pickup takes around 16 hours to charge on a level 2 charger, which is a 240-volt outlet. These chargers can be installed in your home or used at public charging stations. If you go to a Level 3 fast charging site, you can add 100 miles of driving range to your Hummer EV’s battery in under half an hour.

We don’t know the precise charging times for the Hummer EV SUV’s battery yet. However, given that we know that the SUV will run on a smaller battery, we’re expecting it to charge in less time than the Pickup’s battery.
