What Is the New Super Cruise Technology?
Super Cruise is a feature that’s available on a select number of GMC vehicles. It’s the first true hands-free driver-assistance technology that works on compatible roads. With this system, attentive drivers can operate their GMC vehicle without their hands, and the vehicle performs various functions like acceleration and braking on its own.
To do this, the Super Cruise technology relies on its driver attention system and precision LiDAR map data. The driver attention system employs a small camera on the top of the vehicle’s steering column, which monitors the driver’s eyesight. If the vehicle detects that the driver has been looking away from the road for too long, the steering wheel’s light bar illuminates and prompts the driver to return their attention to the road.
This technology combines with real-time cameras located on the exterior of the vehicle, along with GPS technology and other various sensors. Through all of these interconnected devices, drivers can navigate through over 200,000 miles of compatible roads throughout the United States and Canada.
Finally, the latest version of the Super Cruise feature will allow drivers to use it while also towing a trailer. It will account for the size of the trailer behind the vehicle, making it safer to employ the hands-free driving mode while hauling. This is particularly useful for drivers who need to bring a trailer over long distances.
What Are the Benefits of Super Cruise Technology?
The Super Cruise technology makes driving on compatible roads more enjoyable. For example, if you have a long highway trip to take, you can use the Super Cruise technology to handle most of the work for you. While it’s still important that you stay attentive on the road, you can relax a little, as the Super Cruise technology adjusts your speed and follows the road for you.
Another great time to use the Super Cruise technology is during your morning and evening commutes. If you regularly sit in traffic during your commutes, the Super Cruise feature can make these more comfortable. It will automatically adjust your speed based on the traffic around you, allowing for a smoother ride.
How To Use the Super Cruise Feature
To use the Super Cruise feature, you need to first ensure that your vehicle comes equipped with this technology. If so, the next thing to check is that you’re on a compatible road. Most of the major highways in the U.S. are compatible, as are many other main roads. Once you’re sure that you’re on a compatible road, you can turn the Super Cruise feature on by pressing the Adaptive Cruise Control button on your steering wheel.
With the Adaptive Cruise Control system on, the vehicle will then start to check that it’s on a compatible road using GPS technology. It then looks at the driver to ensure they are paying attention, checks there are no system issues, and assesses the road for line markings. Once all conditions are met, the vehicle illuminates the white Super Cruise symbol in the instrument cluster. When you see this light, you can press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to turn the feature on.
After pressing the button, wait for the Super Cruise indicator light to turn green. This means that the system is ready and that you can remove your hands from the steering wheel. When you’re done using the Super Cruise feature, you can turn it off by either pressing the Super Cruise button again or by pressing the brake pedal.
Changing Lanes With Super Cruise
Another new upgrade to the Super Cruise technology is its ability to change lanes. When the Automatic Lane Change feature is engaged, you’ll be able to move over into a desired lane and move around a vehicle in your path. The feature will also change lanes if your current lane is ending or if there’s a slower-moving vehicle in front of you.
With this feature, the driver simply activates the turn signal in the direction they want to go. The system then scans for an opening in that lane, and if it determines that it can safely move over, alerts other drivers that it is doing so. If the system determines that the desired lane is unavailable, it will tell the driver that they must move over manually. This helps to keep the driver informed, allowing you to make better decisions as you’re traveling.
