Towing and Engines

2024 GMC Sierra

The 2024 Silverado 1500 can tow anywhere from 14,500 to 16,000 pounds, depending on the engine. The new GMC Sierra 1500 starts the same but has a more impressive maximum potential rating of 14,500 to 18,500 pounds. The Sierra’s maximum payload capacity for the 1500 version is 4,178 pounds, while the Silverado 1500 ranges from 1,870 to 2,280 pounds. Sierra HD models can even carry up to 7,290 pounds of payload with the dual-rear-wheel body style. Overall, if you need serious power, you’ll prefer the Sierra.

The Silverado offers four engines depending on your chosen trim level: a 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V-8, a 6.2-liter V-8, and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel, all with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The best towing and payload numbers come from the 6.2-liter V-8 engine and optional packages. The Sierra 1500 has two engines: a 6.6-liter V-8 and a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel.

Exterior Design and Trims

Even with the starting Sierra 1500 Pro model, you’ll get practical exterior features like rear trailering mirrors. The bed length comes in either 81.6 or 98.4 inches. The Silverado is also decently equipped to start, and the bed lengths are nearly the same at 82.4 or 98.4 inches.

The trim levels for the 2024 Silverado are the Work Truck (WT), Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, RST, and ZR2. The 2024 Sierra keeps it simpler with six trims: the Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

All the Sierra trims are stylish, but the Denali versions have the most chrome pieces. The Sierra Denali Ultimate trim is new, adding 20-inch alloy wheels, a power sunroof, power LED perimeter lighting, retracting steps, and the latest cabin equipment. It even gets a KICKER rear tailgating audio system. Even starting with the base Pro, the Sierra gets 17-inch silver painted wheels and full LED exterior lighting. The Silverado starts at a similar standard and has increasingly fancy or sporty alterations.

Comfort Technology Features

For standard infotainment and comfort technology, the Sierra’s Pro trim has a 7-inch touch screen, six audio speakers in Double and Crew Cab models (two in Regular cabs), a Wi-Fi hotspot, two USB ports, and Bluetooth. It also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2024 Silverado WT trim has an almost equal starting package but with Chevy’s infotainment system.

Many Sierra trims include supportive bucket front seats, a power sunroof, and wireless phone charging, with advanced comfort features available in certain trims. For example, the Denali comes with OnStar Connected Services for three years, premium perforated leather upholstery, and cab-length side assist steps. A Denali Reserve package will add features that come standard on the Denali Ultimate, such as a power sunroof, digital rearview mirror, head-up display, and adaptive cruise control.

Heavy-Duty Technology Features

Many models of the Sierra are ready for heavy-duty work or off-roading, such as the AT4 with skid plates and hill descent control. It also has all-terrain tires and an AutoTrac two-speed transfer case, allowing you to shift in and out of four-wheel drive as needed. You can add turn-signal-integrated heated power trailering mirrors, a rear window defogger for the winter season, and a power-locking EZ Lift tailgate through optional packages. The Silverado is also strong in this regard, offering a bed-view camera on starting WT models. Recovery hooks are also standard on every Silverado.

Safety Features

GMC and Chevy have large standard packages of passive and active safety features, with more advanced ones becoming available or standard as you climb the trims. But the Sierra includes a teen driver mode standard from the beginning. On the GMC Sierra AT4X or higher, you can make use of a haptic driver-alert seat, a surround-view camera mode, rear cross-traffic alerts, and front and rear parking sensors. The AT4 Premium Plus Package or Denali trims can come with a rearview mirror camera.

The Silverado brings a similar collection of safety features as the Sierra 1500, including a rear vision camera with hitch guidance and a following distance indicator. But you only have to upgrade to the SLE or higher to get a Sierra truck with adaptive cruise control, a hitch-view camera, and an in-vehicle safe trailering app.

New Features

Both models have some interesting enhancements as a light refresh for 2024. On top of new aluminum wheel designs for the Sierra and more chrome details on Denali models, a new set of power retracting side steps come on the AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. All those trims and the SLT can get a new active exhaust feature to enhance performance. Finally, the new 10-speed automatic transmission is now standard on both engines, replacing the six-speed automatic.

As for the Silverado, the WT initial model now has standard OnStar and wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. New exterior color options include Slate Gray or Lakeshore Blue. On the safety side, a rear seatbelt indicator is standard across the board, and safety packages can add front and rear parking sensors. A new digital instrument cluster for the LT trims and higher blends well with the touch-screen area. All told, the new features make the Silverado a little more interesting, but the Sierra’s updates could easily be more fitting for your style.

Though competition has been fierce, the 2024 model years of the Chevrolet Silverado don’t quite match up to those of the 2024 GMC Sierra. For Sierra 1500 and HD-size trucks, the powertrain capabilities and standard features are more appealing, concentrating more valuable equipment onto a slightly shorter list of trims.
