Is your Buick key fob not working properly? If so, you’ll need to replace the battery and program it if the battery has gone bad. Have you lost it? Simplify Your Buick Experience: Key Fob Replacement, Programming, and Battery Change

Buick Key Fob Replacement & How To Program and Change The Battery Your key fob is a convenient way to open and close the doors of your Buick. You can easily press the button on the key fob to activate the doors from a distance, and you don’t have to physically insert the key to get into or out of your Buick. If you notice that you have to get closer and closer to your Buick to activate the doors, the key fob battery is starting to go bad and needs replacement. In addition, if you lose the key fob, you’ll need to have it replaced by an authorized source. Our team at Hiley Buick GMC of Fort Worth, Texas, compiled this step-by-step guide to help you understand how to change the battery and program your Buick key fob and the procedure for getting a replacement.

What Is a Key Fob?

Every time you use your key fob, you’re using innovative technology. It’s essentially a small handheld remote-controlled device controlling a remote keyless entry to your Buick. Inside the key fob are a small antenna and a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag. This remote device communicates with another RFID inside the Buick’s locking system to transmit information and identify whether they are compatible. Once you press the button on the key fob, you activate the RFID reader, which sends a signal to the other device, which is your Buick’s locking mechanism, to activate the locks on the doors, trunk, or rear liftgate. The key fob’s internal components are encased in a hard case to protect the insides and the battery. Each button on the key fob has a purpose. One to unlock the vehicle, and one to lock it. The advantage of a key fob over a metal key is that you can remotely unlock and lock the doors, trunk, and liftgate. You don’t need to insert the metal key and manually open and close the openings. Note that most key fobs have a metal key enclosed within the fob case, so you can use the car key to unlock, lock, and start the vehicle if the battery has gone dead and you’ve not had a chance to replace it.

  • Press the button on the top or side of the key fob to open the fob case and expose the metal key.
  • Carefully remove the key and pry open the side of the key fob.
  • You’ll notice two dents where the key is laid, and you’ll use a small flathead screwdriver to open the key fob where the key was to expose the battery.
  • Once the cover is off, you’ll see the lithium coin battery. Remove it, and make sure it’s the right size.
  • Take the new battery and place it with the positive (+) side facing down in the spot where the old battery was.
