2022 vs. 2023 GMC Canyon Towing Capacity
Let’s start by comparing capacities between these two model years, including towing, payload, curb weight, fuel capacity, and ground clearance. It’s worth noting that the ATX4 trim is newly available in 2023, and we’re excluding the Denali 2WD, as that trim didn’t make it to 2023.
2023 GMC Canyon Tow Capacity
There’s only one trim with an increase, the AT4, which added 150 pounds, going from 7,550 pounds in 2022 to 7,700 pounds in 2023. Even though we don’t see increases elsewhere, the 2023 models still pack a major punch. The Elevation and Denali both offer a hulking 7,700-pound towing capacity, and the AT4X is capable of towing 6,000 pounds.
Payload
We’ll begin with the only decrease, which is the Denali 4WD dipping 70 pounds, going from 1,430 pounds in 2022 to 1,360 pounds in 2023. The AT4X still sits at 1,250 pounds. As for the increases, the AT4 gained 100 pounds of payload capability, jumping from 1,450 to 1,550 pounds. The Elevation 2WD also gained 100 pounds, moving from 1,550 to 1,640 pounds, and the Elevation 4WD jumped 90 pounds, from 1,500 to 1,590 pounds.
Fuel Capacity
The 2023 GMC Canyon gained an additional capacity of 0.4 gallons, going from 21.0 to 21.4 gallons.
Curb Weight
The AT4X has a curb weight of 4,970 pounds, the highest weight among the trims. The Elevation 2WD gained an additional capacity of 380 pounds, going from 4,050 to 4,430 pounds. The Elevation 4WD gained 160 pounds, going from 4,470 pounds in 2022 to 4,630 pounds in 2023. The Denali 4WD gained 320 pounds, jumping from 4,540 to 4,860 pounds.
Ground Clearance
Ground clearance gains were made in every trim. The 2022 Elevation 2WD added 1.3 inches, moving from 8.3 to 9.6 inches, and the Elevation 4WD added 1.4 inches, moving from 8.2 to 9.6 inches of ground clearance. The Denali 4WD gained the most height, an additional 2.3 inches, taking the ground clearance from 8.2 to 10.5 inches. The AT4X has the most ground clearance at 10.7 inches.
2022 vs. 2023 GMC Canyon Dimensions
The 2023 model shows major changes in size. The wheelbase increased by 3 inches, from 128 to 131 inches, and the length increased by 0.8 inches, from 212.4 to 213.2 inches. You’ll see the most difference in height, front track, and rear track across the trims.
Height
The height of the 2022 Elevation 2WD is 70.7 inches, and the 2023 jumps 9.1 inches to 79.8 inches. The Elevation 4WD had a similar jump, moving 9.2 inches from 70.6 to 79.8 inches. The AT4 jumps 9.2 inches from 70.6 to 79.8 inches. You’ll see the biggest jump in the Denali 4WD, an increase of a whopping 9.8 inches, going from 70.6 to 80.4 inches.
Front Track
The Elevation front track jumped 3.7 inches, going from 62.4 to 66.1 inches. The AT4 and AT4X both started at 62.4 inches, but the AT4 jumped 3.7 inches to 66.1 inches, and the AT4X jumped 3.9 inches to 66.3 inches. The Denali falls in the middle, jumping 3.6 inches from 62.4 to 66 inches.
Rear Track
The elevation gets another 3.7-inch increase, going from 62.4 to 66.1 inches. In the 2022 model, the AT4 and AT4X both start at 62.4 inches. The AT4 jumps 3.7 inches to reach 66.1 inches, while the AT4X jumps 3.9 inches to reach 66.3 inches. In the 2022 Canyon, the Denali started at 62.4 inches and jumped 3.5 inches to reach 65.9 inches in the 2023 model.
Interior
The 2023 GMC Canyon shows one change from the 2022 interior dimensions, with an increase of 0.2 inches in front legroom from 45 to 45.2 inches.
Cargo Room
The cargo bed length stayed the same at 61.7 inches, but the cargo bed width jumped 0.3 inches from 57.8 inches in the 2022 model to 58.1 inches in the 2023 model. The biggest increase is in the cargo bed width between the wheelhousing, a 1.1-inch increase from 44.4 to 45.5 inches.
2023 GMC Canyon Specs
Now that we know the changes in capacity and dimension for the 2023 GMC Canyon, let’s move to the specs the 2023 model has to offer.
Mechanics
All models come standard with a 2.7L turbo high-output engine with eight-speed automatic transmission. Also standard are features such as off-road suspension with a 2-inch factory lift and ultra-wide stance, 3.42 rear axle ratio, capless fuel fill, automatic stop/start, and automatic emergency braking.
Exterior
Standard exterior features include automatic on/off headlamps, a CornerStep rear bumper, deep-tinted glass, LED project headlamps, LED tail lamps, radiator grille shutters, a remote locking tailgate, and Signature LED daytime running lamps with fade-on/fade-off animation.
Available options include a power sunroof, hard-folding tonneau cover by REV, cargo box LED lighting, four cargo tie-downs, and a front license plate bracket.
Interior
Standard interior features include an 11.3-inch diagonal GMC Premium infotainment system with Google built-in, three years of OnStar and Connected Services plan, six airbags, carpeted floor covering, front USB ports, front bucket seats, hitch guidance, hitch view, keyless entry and start, a soft-touch instrument panel, and a sport-style steering wheel.
Available interior options include an in-vehicle trailering app, off-road recovery kit, and all-weather floor liners and mats. The AT4 and Denali trims both have available underbody cameras.
Only the Denali comes standard with features such as an 11-inch diagonal color driver information center, a 6.3-inch diagonal multicolor head-up display, blind-zone steering assist, a Bose® premium sound system, driver memory, HD surround vision, rear-center armrest, leather-appointed front seats, and ventilated driver and front passenger seats.
