How Does the GMC Acadia Tow Safely?

There are a number of safety risks in play when towing anything behind your vehicle. These include limited visibility, increased inertia when braking and accelerating, a wider turning radius, tire blowouts, swaying, and more.

The 2023 GMC Acadia is equipped with a number of standard and available safety features that can help you tow heavy loads around Fort Worth, Texas, safely and securely.

Hitch Guidance with Hitch View

Hitch Guidance with Hitch View displays a guideline on your rear vision camera when hooking up a trailer to help you line up your hitch to your trailer. You can also use a zoom feature while driving to get a close-up view of the trailer and hitch to check positioning when in motion.

Traction Select System

The Traction Select System allows you to choose from up to five different driving modes to match your Acadia’s performance to the conditions of the road. One of the driving modes is tow/haul, which keeps the Acadia in a lower gear for more torque and better towing.

Active Torque Control All-Wheel-Drive System

This system sends power to the rear of the vehicle when acceleration is needed while cornering to keep the vehicle on its intended path.

Hill-Descent Control

Sometimes pulling a camper or ATV requires you to traverse one of the many unpaved hills found near Fort Worth. Hill-descent control uses antilock braking to maintain a smooth and controlled descent even on dirt or gravel surfaces.

Hill-Start Assist

When starting from a stopped position on a hill, this feature locks the brakes in place and keeps the vehicle still when shifting your foot from the brake pedal to the gas. This prevents the vehicle and trailer from lunging backward during the transition.

Adaptive Cruise Control

This system allows you to select a gap time between you and any vehicle in front of you while driving on cruise control. Adaptive cruise control prevents you from having to frequently brake and accelerate while towing heavy loads.

Rear Camera Mirror

Why use a mirror when you can use a camera? Rear camera mirror uses a camera in your rearview mirror to provide a clearer picture of your trailer and its surroundings.

High Definition Surround Vision

High Definition Surround Vision employs numerous cameras to display an overhead view of your Acadia. This safety feature is especially practical when towing a trailer that presents additional blind spots.

Safety Alert Seat

Safety Alert Seat uses vibrations on either side of the driver’s seat to alert you of the direction of a potential crash.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Towing heavy loads can place increased strain on your tires. The Acadia is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that helps you keep tabs on the air levels of your tires to reduce the chances of a blowout.

Pro Safety Plus

Acadia Pro Safety Plus is a suite of safety technology that comes standard on the SLE, SLT, and AT4 Acadia trim levels and includes the following safety features:

  • Forward collision alert.
  • Automatic emergency braking.
  • Following distance indicator.
  • Lane change alert with side blind-zone alert.
  • Lane-keep assist with lane departure warning.
  • Front pedestrian braking.
  • Rear cross-traffic alert.
  • Automatic high beams.

The Denali trim comes standard with GMC Pro Safety Plus, which includes all of the features listed above in addition to rear parking assist.
