WHAT IS THE TOWING CAPACITY OF THE 2021 GMC SIERRA?

The GMC Sierra is a functional, capable, and powerful truck. The Sierra 1500 is the regular full-size pickup, but if you need more power, you can get the heavy-duty Sierra 2500 or 3500. All three of the Sierra pickup trucks offer a choice of engines to get you the power you need for any job, no matter how big or small. Take a look at the engine and configurations available for the 2021 GMC Sierra and the towing capacities for each.

THE SIERRA 1500 ENGINES

The Sierra 1500 stands out in the crowded full-size pickup truck market with its upscale design, multifunction tailgate, and engine options. The Sierra 1500 has five different engine options, and each one has the capability to tow and haul heavy loads.

  • A 4.3-liter V-6 gas engine with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque.
  • A 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine with 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque.
  • A 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
  • A 5.3-liter V-8 gas engine that develops 355 horsepower and generates 383 pound-feet of torque.
  • A 6.2-liter V-8 V-8 gas engine that puts out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

TOWERING POWER

The Sierra 1500 has a max towing capacity of 11,800 pounds when equipped with the Max Trailering Package,  the double cab, and the 6.2-liter turbo V-8 engine. Even the base 4.3-liter V-6 engine has the power to tow up to 7,600 pounds with a conventional hitch, and stepping up to the 5.3-liter V-8 gets you the power to pull up to 9,900 pounds when equipped with  a conventional hitch.

Choose the 2.7-liter turbo, and the Sierra 1500 can tow up to 9,200 pounds with a conventional hitch, while the 3.0-liter turbodiesel has the power to pull 9,300 pounds if it has the standard bed, the double cab, and rear-wheel drive.

THE SIERRA HD ENGINES

Bump up to the Heavy Duty Sierra, and you’ll have two more powerful engines to choose from. The base powertrain for the 2500 is a 6.6-liter V-8 gas engine with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, or you can opt for a 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 turbodiesel that puts out 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The gas engine works with a six-speed automatic, while the turbodiesel has a 10-speed automatic.

TOWERING POWER

The towing power for the Sierra HD depends on the cab style, the engine, and the type of hitch. The most powerful Sierra 3500HD can pull up to 36,000 pounds when equipped with the regular cab, the long bed, rear-wheel drive, and the turbodiesel V-8 engine. This towing capacity also requires the Max Towing Package and a gooseneck hitch.

The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD has a max towing capacity of 18,500 pounds. You can get this with a regular hitch or a gooseneck hitch and the turbodiesel engine.

TRAILERING AND TOWING PACKAGES AND FEATURES

Whether you have the Sierra 1500 or one of the heavy-duty trucks, GMC offers trailer enhancing features to make it easier and safer to haul even the heaviest loads. Some of these include the:

  • Max Trailering Package:
This package adds larger rear axles, retuned shocks, and heavy-duty rear springs. It also upgrades to an enhanced cooling radiator. Adding this package makes the Sierra more durable and allows it to reach its max pulling capacity.
  • Trailering Camera Package:
The trailering camera package has up to 15 different camera views, including the transparent trailer view. This technology is available for the 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models. The transparent view is a unique feature that allows the driver to see traffic behind the trailer, almost as if you can see right through it. This helps whether you are on the highway, backing up in a parking lot, or merging into traffic.
  • Tow/Haul Mode:
The tow/haul mode provides the driver with better control of the truck when hauling heavy loads on steep terrain. It will automatically slow the vehicle down as it descends a slope to help protect the brakes.
  • Trailer Sway Control:
This system senses when a trailer starts to sway and will apply the Sierra’s brakes or dial back the engine power to gain control. This system works with the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller when hooked up to a trailer with brakes. It will automatically apply the trailer’s brakes to stabilize the trailer.

PROGRADE TRAILERING

The GMC ProGrade Trailering System uses high-resolution cameras that you can see using the central infotainment display screen. The system is also compatible with the available smartphone app to make towing easier. Some of the features include:

  • Hitch Guidance with Hitch View:
Displays dynamic gridlines and offers zoom capability to help to make hooking up to your trailer easier.
  • Auto Electric Parking Brake Assist:
This feature helps after backing up to your trailer. It allows the Sierra to automatically apply the parking brake to help prevent any unwanted movement.
  • Hitch Area Lighting:
A lamp in the tailgate panel provides light directly down on the hitch so you can see what you need to hook up to in the dark.
  • Integrated Trailer Brake Controller:
This allows you to program the trailer brake levels to a specific trailer.

IN-VEHICLE TRAILERING APP

A new trailering app brings all of the functions of the pro-grade trailering system together. It’s integrated into the infotainment system and offers a variety of features, such as a pre-departure checklist with an illustrated guide of all the steps needed to connect a trailer. The trailering app also has a trailer light test that runs through a lighting sequence to make sure all the lights are working properly, as well as customizable trailer profiles. You can store a trailer’s profile after connecting it to help keep track of mileage and have set reminders for trailer maintenance.
